Office Sub-Assistant Commissioner, Bureau of R.F. & A.L., State of Texas, Liberty, Liberty Co., June 9" 1867 Lt. J. T. Kirkman 26" U.S. Infty. A.A.A. Genl Hd. Qrts. Bu R.F. & A.L. Galveston. Sir: I have the honor to submit the following Report - During my absence from this place last week, a Freedman was arrested & tried for an "Aggravated Assault" upon a Freedwoman. "Knocking her down & Kicking her." The trial was before the County Court (Judge Adair.) and the Jury (twelve) was composed entirely of Freedmen. The Defendant had for Counsel two of the ablest Lawyers at this Bar. (Judges Cleaveland & Pickett). The Court appointed A. B. Trowell, Prosecuting Atty. The trial lasted several hours.
