Sir:
I have the honor to submit the following Report -

During my absence from this place last week, a Freedman was arrested & tried for an "Aggravated Assault" upon a Freedwoman. "Knocking her down & Kicking her."

The trial was before the County Court (Judge Adair.) and the Jury (twelve) was composed entirely of Freedmen.

The Defendant had for Counsel two of the ablest Lawyers at this Bar. (Judges Cleaveland & Pickett). The Court appointed A. B. Trowell, Prosecuting Atty.

The trial lasted several hours. The Lawyers (on both sides) made their best [[strikethrough]] off [[/strikethrough]] effort. no buncum speeches, plain good sense, directly to the point, explaining the Law fully. Of course each

Transcription Notes:
Believe buncum is misspelled in document. Correct spelling bunkum which means nonsense.
