The Judge in reading the charge was careful in explaining the duties & responsibilities of a Juror.

The Jury retired at four o'clock, at Quarter after four o'clock, they returned into court with their Verdict. "Guilty. One hundred dollars fine" This was the lowest penalty according to the law, [The penalty according to the law is a fine of from One hundred dollars, to One Thousand Dollars, & imprisonment for two (2) years.]

An appeal was immediately taken to the District Court.

The Judge, Sheriff and the community generally, inform me that it was one of the most able conducted cases they ever saw, and that the Jury found exactly in accordance with the Law & Evidence.

The Judge informed me that in all his experience on the Bench he never saw a more attentive Jury, and that their Verdict proved they had given strict attention to the evidence, and that they were governed in their verdict solely by the evidence & not by the speeches of the Lawyer.
