(M 390) 1867 Millican Texas June 25th 1867 Miller Edward Capt & SAC Reports compliance with provisions of Special orders #66 Ex 1 Head Qrs Bur Ref F &c Galveston and says "I proceeded to Dr Merediths plantation, and thoroughly investigated the case in question. It appears that several of the hands wished to go to Brenham to Register, & were dissatisfied on the farm. Corpl Culp was sent up to attend to the difficulty he found the men anxious to register. told them to Register at Chapel Hill They went to work again - in an hour's time left and went to Brenham. he wrote to Capt Collins that they had left without authority. One was arrested and put in jail at Brenham - is there now working in the chain gang. The others with one exception went to work and were put at nights in Calaboose Corpl. Culp tied one up one hour & a half. Requests that enlisted men may not be allowed to be "nigger drivers" as he thinks he was compensated or instigated by the planters to do it. The freedmen are very are very and anxious about
