that the woman Adelaide had insulted my wife in the public highway. Being a man of rather an excitable temperament and the woman passing my house immediately after I had received such information, I went out to meet her and expostulate on her about her conduct. I asked her to get down from her horse. She resisted me. We had a scuffle. I became more excited and angry and took her in my back yard and whipped her. For a more full statement of the matter I would refer to my representation of the affair to Gen Mower which has come under your observation, so I understand. 

I do not state these matters to say that I did right, for had I taken time to ponder over the matter, I should have acted quite differently. But I do think my punishment has already been sufficient. I was arrested by the military authorities of the United States, carried over to Houston and kept for some time in custody. The matter was then referred to Gen Mower to the civil courts and I was required to give bond for my appearance.
