I have the honor to acknowledge the reception of your Endorsement "E.B. 501" on a letter written to you during my illness by Mr Sam. H. Sharp.

You certainly cannot comprehend the state of affairs in this District. Contracts as a general thing have been made for a share of the crop, the employer furnishing provisions for the entire year. The Cotton crop has failed in toto, the high water & Worm having entirely destroyed it, not a hundred bales of cotton will be made in this County this year, now the employer wants to get rid of advancing provision, he having nothing as a lien, to accomplish this he is willing
