of the "Donoho's" on Johnson's Bayou about daylight Monday morning, surrounding the house, but unfortunately did not find either of the men; the Sheriff reports that it is the common talk of the neighborhood in which the "Donoho's" live that they did commit the assault upon the freedman in your district & that they have been expecting a party there to arrest them ever since they returned to "Johnsons Bayou;"  
The Sheriff also believes that they were notified of the approval of the party by a messenger sent by their friends from "Sabine" as he has been informed that a Horseman crossed from Sabine to La shortly after he (the Sheriff) left there in the boat; under these circumstances it is little wonder that the expedition was a failure; & it is further clear that any expedition to "Johnsons Bayou" to arrest these parties will be a failure, unless a party of Cavalry can be sent from the La side, & even then it is
