New York, Sept 27th, 1864.

Brig. Genl. Fry.
Pro. Mar. Genl.

Sir-
Captain Edward Miller late 38th Regt: N.Y. Vols. is desirous of obtaining an appointment in the Veteran Reserve Corps. Captain Miller lost his arm at the Battle of Williamsburg on the 5th May 1862. He was promoted from the ranks in consequence of his superior qualifications and efficiency, and probably has no superior in tactical instruction.

His gallantry as a soldier is proverbial.
I am sir - Your Obedt Servt.
(Signed) J. H. Hobart Ward.
