Statement of Lem: a Freedman.

I belonged to Col. John McCrary from infancy to the time of the "Break up". I was raised along with the white children till I was old enough to work in the field. It was sometime in the month of July 1865. I dont remember on what day, that I went into the bedroom occupied by the children, it was an hour or two after dark, and they, the children were all in bed, there were two beds and a pallet in the room. One bed was occupied by the two eldest girls, the other bed by a girl and the little boy, and the pallet was for the other Boy, Jim. I went in to see Jim who was sleeping on the pallet, I did not want anything with him, I just went into the room where he was at. I had no object, but just went in where Jim was  I had gotten to the foot of the bed where Jim was sleeping, when one of the girls cried out Pa-Pa some one is in here. I did not have my hand under the covers when the girl cried for her Pa. I had my hand on top of the bed clothes. I ran out at the door as soon as the girl called her Pa. and went up to Martha's cabin. I did not see anything of Mr. McCray as I ran out. After I had
