Sir:
Your letter without date has been received. In reply - 

"It appears to me that you have used my name in connection with one of your Reports in regard to my Employer Lieut Chas Garretson."

Excuse my differing with you, Lieut Chas Garretson is not your Employer. You are in the employ of the U.S. Govmt, and to the Govmt you owe your allegiance -

"You are trying to make my name prominent as a Witness against Lieut Garretson." 

I cannot see what particular prominence I have given you, over others named as Witness in my Report. 

"I defy you to come out like a Man and give a full report of what conversation I have had with you."

I do not remember having conversed with you on the subject, I may have mentioned
