small crops and such other property as it was customary for slaves to hold in this country, and all manner of outrages were committed upon them before Jany  The troops at Jasper refuse to give relief to the Freedmen in any case as you will see from the enclosed note and I am informed that whenever a freedman applies to them he is answered with the Oath  I do not say that such is the case but have no reason to doubt the truth of the report. I am told that an old man applied to them for an order to get his children and for no other offence was whipped from their camp to town.

The orphan minor children are not included in any order I have yet seen. Please inform me whether I have the right to bind them out as poor children are bound out in many of the states. The small children cant get homes for themselves as no person is willing to take them for 1 year only but if they could get them till they are 18 or 20 years old they would be willing to properly clothe feed and educate them.

I am making an effort to start a school here for the Freed Children the Books are wanting little primers for them to learn their letter from.

I must ask you to get some Books if possible for them as a school for Freedmen would be quite a novelty here and I think would have
