Office Sub Ast Com Woodville Aug 5th 1866 Gen J B Kiddoo Sir On the departure of Mr Kirkwood bearing my last communication the vagrant Wright Bundy was too sick to travel from having taken poison in stolen watermelons he then was convalescent but has since relapsed So fears are now entertained that he will ultimately recover The freedmen in this County are doing tolerably They have long since cleaned out the cotton crop which is quite good tho the catapillar has already made his appearance in many forms let his depredations be what they may at least one half the usual crop will be gathered for the prospect is that a large crop would be made if no disaster overtakes it. The corn crop is quite light and much of the corn used next year will have to be shiped here from the western States I see no evidences of returning loyalty to the government nor any disposition on the part of the masses to do justice to the freedmen Treason towards the one and oppression to the other are the popular qualifications for Legislators & officers of justice
