off those feelings of distrust and dislike of all banks which they have imbibed from the whites of this State.

The schools are not in so flourishing a condition as could be wished but it is expected that there will be a fuller attendance when the weather become cooler.

The Freedmen have formed several benevolent associations whose objects are to care for the members when sick, and to pay the funeral expenses of those that die.

Lieut. Hardenbrook and myself have each spend four days on the plantations about Sand Point and Arcola in Brazoria Co. during the month. We found the freedmen as a general thing doing very well and the crops were in an excellent condition.
