Galveston, Texas  April 10th 1867

Major Gen'l Griffin
Comd’g Dist. of Texas.

General;

One of our Agents the Rev. H. Reedy has encountered such serious opposition in his recent canvass of Brazoria County from malignant falsehoods that we feel constrained to make you the following statement.

Representations were made by the Rev. Mr. Welsh that Mr Reedy was an emissary of the rebels and this made such an impression on the freedmen in Columbia, Brazoria County, that Mr. R's life was threatened, but through the mediation of the Bureau Sub-Ass't Commissioner there, Mr R. succeeded in partially convincing the freedmen of his good intentions but was utterly unable to effect any organization of the League.

No doubt the Rev. Welsh's motives in traducing Mr. R were Churchly ones: Unfortunately, the effect has been to materially retard the growth of so important a movement for our people as the Union League Organization.

Very Respectfully
Your Obt Servant
