This Co. is all right, can vote down the opposition and have done it, during the war. They still hold to the party lines as strongly as during the war Unionism against Secession.
From Quitman to Sulphur Springs (Hopkins Co This county is in a terrible condition. - In 1862 James Milsap, Mr Greenwood, Bud Campbell and a Mr Dearman were hung at this place for being union men. Thomas Searles put the rope around Campbell neck. Counsel Goff hung Milsap and Green Smith hung Dearman and Greenwood. They are still at their homes in Hopkins defying Govt. Authorities. Green Smith is now Just over the lines in Dallas Co. Peter Horton, now in Hunt Co. and Merril Brannum hung five men at Oxford Bridge, on suphur Hopkins Co in 1861. Three brothers named Howard and two brother named Henby.
George Hellum, George Cox, John Hellum, Charles Northerland, M.G. Sittle are in Hopkins near the line of Lamar. These men were tried by a mock Jury last term of the court for killing union men Judge Maberry (now the Dist. judge of this Dist) presiding all were acquitted.
Whig Warren shot and killed a negro 75 years old in Hopkins Co. about Christmas 1866 John H. Withers is a witness in the case.
