Clarksville, Texas
Aug 6th 1867,

My Dear Kirkman,

I write you officially by to-days mail. I have been at work upon charges against Duty & Whitsett, they are terrible scoundrels, & stand no chance of justice until the courts are re-organized. Please see that they are kept in the hands of the military authorities for several months at the least.

Judge Latimer is ill and entirely unable to attend to his duties, which I have assumed. For Gods sake send some one in his place, as he wishes to be relieved, & really should be as he can do better service "politically" - For fear you should happen to select me, allow me to decline before hand, as nothing would induce me to accept the position. I shall do my best to catch Genrl, but have little hopes of success. It will require twice, & "lots" of patience. Please write me & let me know how affairs progress.

Very truly,
You Obdt Servt
