I have the honor to report that on the 13th inst. I received the following communication:

Madisonville Texas
May 13th 1867

Capt Reinhard.
Dr Sir:

On last Saturday night the freedmen of this visinity had a frolic in this town. and some being drunk, and others with arms. a difficulty occured among them, and it resulted a shooting spree, and the murder of one called George Washington. It is the desire of the community as well as of the freedmen: that you come down and investigate the case. The suspicion falls on one certain Negro called John Johnson. alias Shannon- come at once.

Upon the reception of which I immediately proceeded to Madisonville Madison County.

On my arrival there I found the Freedmen of Madisonville in great excitement over the Murder of one of their friends.

The suspected party one Freedman John Johnson was in jail
