I was at the party on saturday night. I saw the prisoner run away after the shooting. Did not see him shoot. Saw Freedman George Washington fall down. Kate Aldrich (Freedwoman) states; I live at Mr. W. W. Byres in Madison County. I was at the party. Saw the difficulty with a drunken man. Saw shortly afterwards standing in the door of the house, the prisoner with a pistol in his hand and saw him point the pistol at Freedman George Washington, but the cap burst. Immediately after that I heard a shot, but could not see the prisoner then. Saw Freedman George Washington run into the house and sing out "I am shot" Mary Shannon (Freedwoman) states; I live at the Madisonville Hotel in Madisonville. (Witness makes the same statement as Freedwoman Kate Aldrich.) Louis Benton (Freedman) states; I work at the Hotel in Madisonville. Have known the prisoner about one year. I always thought he was a bad boy. Saw him when he returned from Millican. He told me he had to run away from there, that he got into a difficulty and shot a man in the hip. I was not at the party. Dont know any thing about the shooting of George Washington. Thomas Miller (White) states; I have known the prisoner sometime. I think he is a very bad boy. He told me last saturday that he was going to kill a negro that night.
