Office Sub Ass't. Com'r.
Bureau R.F and A.L.
Centreville Leon Co. Texas June 29th 1867

1st Lieut. J.T. Kirkman
A.A. General
Galveston Texas:

Sir:

I have the honor to report that on the 15th of this month, Mr. John Q.A. Carter of Freestone County delivered himself up to me as prisoner, under the following circumstances. Mr. Carter stated that he had killed in self defence, one John Edwards, that he was willing to stand a trial either my Military or Civil authority. Upon this statement I proceed with Mr. Carter to Freestone County, and turned him over to the Chief Justice of said County demanding an immediate investigation, and trial of the case. Chief Justice Womack of Freestone County, in compliance with my request, tried this case at once, and after a fair trial found the prisoner not guilty. (Justified homicide.)
