by that time their cases can be safely turned over to the Civil Courts. The Sheriffs of Titus & Red River Counties should both be removed, & resolute determined men put in their places. I shall make this matter the subject for future communication.

It is of course unnecessary to say that my action is warmly approved by every good citizen. Please have an order addressed to Maj Claflin in reference to the prisoners which, I may turn over him, directing him to hold them until their cases can be submitted at Head-Quarters.

Guest has left the State. I have men on track, though I have little hopes of catching him. The only way this can be done is by persons in citizens clothes, & if I can get intelligence of his whereabouts, I shall by this method.

Maj Claflin wishes instructions in reference to the apprenticing of minors, which I cannot give him. Will you please instruct him.

I think I may properly be ordered back, to Galveston, or elsewhere at any time now, as it will be several weeks before orders can reach me. I should recommend that an officer be stationed permanently at Clarksville.
