Clarksville. Texas,
Aug 1st. 1867.

My dear Kirkman.
I have ridden forty (40) miles on horse back today, & feel an ague chill coming on. I have had them for the last two days, besides it is very late. I shall therefore write you a private letter, & defer an official report until the next mail. 

I reached Clarksville about 2 o'clock yesterday morning, & immediately went to see Judge Latimer, who is one of "natures noblemen", after getting a few items I went to the Hotel, & after a few hours sleep began proceedings, I saw some of the good people of this town, & came to the conclusion that the troubles in this County were caused by a set of lawless men, & that if their leaders were caught, the gang would be broken up, & I would have then to deal merely with individuals, I found that four men, by name Duty, Stanley, Mitchell & Henderson, all men of considerable property, were the ringleaders, Duty lives several miles in the country, but came in town during the evening, I was notified
