I forward herewith resolution of the "Protection league" endorsing my action, in the arrest of Duty & Whitsill &c, also list of members of the association, all of whom are endorsed by Judge Latimer as firm friends of law & order.

A petition will be referred to you, gotten up by the friends of Duty, but it is not signed by any men, which would entitle it to the slightest consideration.  Judge Latimer is seriously ill, & wishes to be relieved from his duties in the Bureau.  Please send some one immediately.  I would recommend some such man as Capt Rand, unless it should appear best to send a company of cavalry here, which in my opinion would be the better plan.  Bowie & Lamar Counties are both much more accessible from this place than from Mt Pleasant, & there too the fugitives from justice which are lurking in these counties can be arrested.  I can really do nothing.  I am watched
