In a former letter I stated that the removal of the present Sheriff was desirable, but I have since become convinced that he is the best man in the county for the position, who can take that test oath.  I would therefore recommend & in this Judge Latimer coincides, that the present Sheriff of the County be retained.

Judge Latimer & Judge Gray are both strongly in favor of including Marion County in the Distc, in which I recommended that Martial Law should be declared.

I go to Boston tomorrow.  I am informed on good authority that Baker is in custody, having been captured at Linden in Davis County, one soldier being killed.  Guest is alive & well, & is somewhere in the Indian Nation. I have been endeavoring to learn his exact whereabouts, but have not as yet succeeded.
