Clarksville Texas August 14th 1867 Lieut J.T. Kirkman 26th Infty. A.A.A.G. Bureau RF & AL Lieut In a former letter I stated that the removal of the present Sheriff was desirable, but I have since become convinced that he is the best man in the county for the position, who can take that test oath. I would therefore recommend & in this Judge Latimer coincides, that the present Sheriff of the County be retained. Judge Latimer & Judge Gray are both strongly in favor of including Marion County in the Distc, in which I recommended that Martial Law should be declared. I go to Boston tomorrow. I am informed on good authority that Baker is in custody, having been captured at Linden in Davis County, one soldier being killed. Guest is alive & well, & is somewhere in the Indian Nation. I have been endeavoring to learn his exact whereabouts, but have not as yet succeeded. Very Respy, Your Obet Sevt. C.S. Roberts 2 Lieut 17th Infy
