I however, had an interview with Genl Gregory before it was made and he told me he would approve such a one at any time.

Now, Sir, I ask you to come or send an Agent, come yourself if convenient or appoint any good man here or turn it over to the Law and I willingly abide the decision. I prefer your own to any other investigation, which could not be so fairly made anywhere else as here as the transgressions have been manifold and the witnesses are numerous. The man who left, Billy Lockhart, by threats previously made some of the hands uneasy & they felt it unsafe as did my family for him to remain. I suggest as good men to investigate & settle if you cannot come—the Judge of County Court, both the Clerks, Sheriff, Hon. Jas. Smither, the two Harpers (Wyatt & Ed), Profs McKinney father & son, Mr S. Gibbs, Esq. Bush Rodgers Bowen Maj Hogue & others.

I refer without permission to J. C. & S. R. Smith & Co. Shipman & Felder, W. W. McMahon, Messrs. Henly, Sabuzan, & McGar, merchants in Galveston. My contract gives one third of the cotton & one fourth of corn to the Freedmen with privilege of truck patches, the expenses all my own, embracing Drs. bills, the items of Contract and Conduct of freedmen
