General,

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of a letter from Maj. Genl Kiddoo's Hd. Qrs. of Jany 17th, in relation to treatment of a freedman, confined in the jail of Wharton County for murder of another freedman.

Enclosed I send you copy of letter sent by me to the County Judge of that county, and will use my exertions, not only in this, but in all cases to see that freedmen, who are prisoners, shall receive humane treatment, and such as is extended to white prisoners.

Very Respectfully
Your ob't Srv't
