La Grange, Fayette Co. Texas
Sep. 1, 1866

To
Maj General Kiddoo:

The undersigned citizens of La Grange and Fayette County, would respectfully represent, that a report is current of a leave of absence having been granted to Capt. T. Johnson, Agent of the Freedmen's Bureau at this place, and fearing that he may be sent to some other place on his return we respectfully request that Capt. Johnson may be returned to us.

We are accustomed to the ways of Capt Johnson, and he, in like manner, understands the wants of our community, so that, if he be removed, and a stranger be sent in his stead, a complete revolution will take place in the laboring interest of the county, and now, of all times in the year, do we need system and order. We believe that Capt. Johnson is generally acceptable to both whites and blacks.
