In regard to the second freedman Mat Hewlin who was shot on the 17th Dec last, the following are the facts.
Hewlin met three white men on the 18th and played cards with them. The white men won Hewlin's money. When they separated Hewlin told them that he would see them again. On the morning of the 17th Hewlin borrowed a rifle gun and a horse of another freedman and went to where the white men were camped to again play cards with them. On that occasion Hewlin won money and a six shooter from the white men. The game was about closed when one of the men (named Alexander) told Hewlin if he did win their money and pistol they had a way of getting them back; and here Alexander presented his pistol at Hewlin when the latter sprang to his feet placing his hand on his "six shooter" and said " that was the game he played" Alexander then fired at Hewlin.
Here Jerry (Freedman) The only witness present, became frightened and ran away, he heard the report of two other guns as he left. He ran to a plantation near by and gave them the alarm, some persons went to the camp very soon, the white men had gone, they found Hewlin lying on the  ground having received three wounds from which he died. Two of these murderers were arrested in this place on the 25th of December. They were tried before the Committing Court. Alexander was refused bail. The other man (named Mattock)
