Bureau Refugees, Freedmen & Abandoned Lands
Office of Assistant Commissioner
for the State of Mississippi
Vicksburg Miss, Feb 15th 1866.

To the Freedmen Bureau Officers of Texas.

I wish to introduce Mr Henell Stevens who goes to Texas for the purpose of purchasing lands and remaining there as a citizen.

I would ask for Mr Stevens every accommodation from your hands that it may be in your power to grant, feeling sure that such favor will be worthily bestowed. He is a gentleman of intelligence & ability who has served during the War as Medical Storekeeper, and while in the discharge of his duty manifested an interest in the welfare of the colored people surpassed by none. I remember Mr. Stevens furnishing the Freedmen medical supplies, paying Freedmen Hospital employees and colored nurses when no other Officer would take responsibility of such action. He was sustained at Washington and deserves well of all friends of the colored man for this noble action.

Very Respectfully
(Signed) Saml Thomas Col. and
Asst. Com. Freedmans Bureau
