connected with so extensive and important work are now under serious consideration by the Ass't. Com'r of the Bureau in Texas. 

From a careful examination of the subject of procuring teachers for the next school year in Texas, I am brought to the decision, that there is but little encouragement to expect a complement from aid societies North; and, that in connection with the uncertain and meagre receipts from these schools in the way of tuition, or rents or returns on public property convertible for school purposes, the Bureau must be provided for in this direction by other means, and the Government will necessarily have to assist in the great work of preparing the Freedmen for a proper understanding, and use of the rights recently conferred upon them
