I have just returned from New York City, after a conference with Revd. Dr. Whipple, Revd. M.E. Strieby and Revd. E.P. Smith.

The Association had until my visit felt some distrust of Texas, and had not purposed doing much for us, believing that any advances made would not be understood, or received in the right spirit; and under the operations of certain antagonistic influences at Galveston, any efforts put forth would be, to a great extent, [[strikethrough]] be [[/strikethrough]] misrepresented, misdirected, and opposed.

I was received by the officers above mentioned of the "American Missionary Association" with great courtesy and kindness, and they evidently appreciated the compliment paid to the Society, in sending a Staff Officer to present the wants of Texas, and to make a direct appeal for assistance.
