Being politically inlightened enough to understand the policies of this Country I naturally became a sympathizer with the colored race of this land at my first landing on Columbia's soil, thinking that this beautiful country ought to be free throughout and righteousness, liberty and wisdom dwell in every bondman's house, I worked silently with the Car of Progress and a Divine ruling blessed the effort, for those, whom the Gods wish to destroy, they make mad first and this might rightfully be applied to our erring and ill-directed Southern Brethren, but their madness is not yet checked, they are persevering in unrighteous persecutions and outwronging that poor downtrodden colored race, whom they never paid for their labors, but with stripes and clothes that the poorest beggars of Europe would be ashamed of to wear. Only last Saturday they killed a Colored man in Austin City named Jacob Fountaine whom his friends had elected president to preside at an Association they termed "The loyal Texas League of Liberty" to create means and ways to provide for their poor and schools for their children, or homes for the homeless. This morning came a colored woman to me from Guadalupe Co crying and complaining to me they took her eldest daughter from her with whom she made her living by washing and bound her out, claiming that Gov. Hamilton issued a law to bind out all colored children and so she had to give up her. The name of the man who took her children is Wiseman and her name is Emeline Stepney, she appears to be a very virtuous well behaved woman,
