Dear Mr. Cowan:--

Your kind letter of July 6th is received, and I thank you for hearty congratulations. The honour conferred by the University of our state was arranged for entirely without my knowledge and during my absence in Europe. It was a complete surprise to me, and, hence, the more keenly enjoyed.

You were very good indeed to let me have from your collection the six beautiful little Whistler's, and they add very much to the interest of the collection I am forming. Were it not for the kindness of yourself and a few other collectors, it would have been impossible for me to have accumulated the treasures now under my care. I am hoping to add a few others, by degrees, and to eventually accumulate representative examples of the various periods and mediums of the Master's work.

The price you name, £ 300-0-0, for the last two pictures asked for is entirely satisfactory to me, and I take much pleasure in handing you herewith enclosed draft payable to your order for that amount.
