My dear Mr. Morse:--
The balance of Kobayashi's shipments has been unpacked, and, as promised in my letter to you of the 19th instant, I am pleased to give you a word or two concerning them.
The bulk of the two shipments consists of examples of Hokusai's painting. There are screens, kakemono and panels; and the majority of them are extremely interesting. I am inclined to think that the lot as a whole ranks fully equal to those in the Boston Museum or the group in my own collection.
The pair of six-fold screens called "The Six Tamagawas" are really wonderful.
Another pair of four-fold large-sized screens -, a landscape subject, seem to me to be even more wonderful in a certain way, but not as fine technically.
Another pair of six-fold screens represent the twelve months of the year, and are veritable masterpieces.
Neither this pair of screens, nor the pair of four-fold landscape screens figure in the Tokio Exhibition.
Among the kakemono, there are a small pair of superb dragons, a very large single dragon, some very beautiful figure
