them to come to the meetings at the Academy on Friday night. Came home and wrote to Gertrude from whom I got a more cheerful and encouraging letter with regard to Maurice this morning. Received a note from Girard which I answered. 

Monday Feb. 10" 1875. Went to work on a picture this morning 20 x 24 which I intend for my contribution to the Academy fund. Just as I got fairly at the sky there was a knock at my door and Joe Tomkins came in. I was glad to see him although I expected my sky would be ruined. He staid two hours and after he went away I pitched in and made the paint fly and I think I have the foundation of a good picture. Dined at Frank Mapes Recd. a note from Mr. Holt saying his wife was ill and the dinner for tomorrow would have to be postponed. Wrote to Gertrude from whom I received a letter this morning. 

Thursday 11. It has rained in torrents all day but tonight has cleared off and is colder. Painted on my new picture. Menger called and told me a lot of things about the Cropseys. Girard came in the midst of the rain. Went over to Vauxs after dinner. Mary was sick in bed with a violent headache. Saw the boys and Lucy and Sara. Julia was going to the Liederkranz ball. Lucy, Berger and Downing are coming over to breakfast with me tomorrow. Received a letter from Gertrude and wrote to her. 

Friday 12. I had my breakfast party and spent the rest of the day in misery having had one of the most violent and persistent headaches I have had in a year, so that I could not go to the Academy meeting. 

Saturday 13. The Taylors lunched with me after which I left for home meeting Lucy at the Depot for the 4 P.M. train. Maurice met us at the station and we drove over on the ice. It was very cold and the big wood fire at home was very inviting. Joe Tomkins was there. I took the baby a great Noahs Ark which pleased him greatly. 

Tuesday 16. Joe and I came down yesterday. Maurice drove us over on the ice which is more than two feet thick. Sam Coykendall came down in the drawing room car with us and we talked together all the way down. I got him to subscribe to the fellowship fund of the Academy. In the evening attended
