at the Art Museum. Dr. Bellows made a speech in which he referred to me and others as better able to talk on such matters than a mere layman like himself but he little knows how poorly we talk about what we do.

Tuesday May 18" 1875. Went home on Saturday by the Wallkill Valley. Cold and raw & windy on Sunday. The hall stove was taken down but we sat by a good fire in the hearth all day. Major Sykes, Roosa and Miss Galis and Miss Roosa dined with us. Came back on Monday by Hudson River road. Gifford, Milkman & his wife on the train. Council in the evening.  This morning went to Cottiers to see the pictures, to Gonpils and to Suedecors. Rouse called and stayed in the afternoon.

Wednesday 19. The award of prizes to the students of the Academy took place this evening in the galleries the Academy being thrown open free for the evening.  Whittredge made a short address and gave out prizes after which Whitelaw Reid spoke for half an hour and very effectively after the exercises we went over to the Carnival Room with Ward, Reid, Whittredge, Richards, Eastman Johnson and his wife and myself where we had a glass of champagne and a nice chat for an hour. Altogether it was a very pleasant occasion.

Sunday 23. Gertrude came down on Friday and in the evening we went up to Eastman Johnsons. Saturday which was very warm was spent in shopping and a visit to the Academy. In the evening I went to the club and not finding it very interesting did not stay late. Today we went over to Girard's and took him and his wife to Coney Island. It was a very warm day but we found it cool and delightful there with grand skies and effects of passing thunder showers The country is delicious in color and the long lines of the level stretch towards the sea with its woods and just blossoming orchards interested me greatly by its simplicity. I could make pictures of those things and ought to go there to make more studies.  We had dinner there and got home at half past six after a very enjoyable day.

Thursday 27. We went to Thomas' concert last night and found it very pleasant. Downing came down from the Palisades after an Alderney Cow my father sent them, bringing an invitation for us to come up and spend Sunday. The weather is very pleasant in town but I begin to long for the country  Moore came in and I let him have my little "Fisher
