but am tired tonight. Found letters from Whittredge and from Eastman Johnson both of which I have answered this evening and also one from Mr. McVickar, who writes that Booth is getting on nicely. Also wrote a note to Joe Tubby and one to Platt telling him he would get an offer in writing for the articles I appraised. Miss Noxon went home today.

Wednesday Aug 25" 1875. Went out to Watson Hollow with my sketching materials and stopped with Mr. John S Hoyt. Made a sketch in the afternoon but didnt find much I care to do except to get sketches of the children. Thursday morning made a sketch of a little girl feeding chickens and had engaged another one to come at 4 o'clock after school, but feeling a headache coming on I concluded to come home and go back on Monday, as the school ends on Saturday and I will have a better chance to get the children next week. Found Annie Norton here with Miss Hastings, Mrs Schaffer and Julia. After tea my head ache disappeared. Recd. a letter from Stafford with an article from the Chicago Tribune on the Exposition giving an account of its prospects which seem to be good. We are all pretty troubled and worried over our affairs and I am far from happy. It interferes with my work and I have to make the greatest effort to keep off discouragement.

Friday 27. Wrote to Joe Tomkins to come here when he comes East so that we may talk over and advise on our affairs. Recd a letter from Gussie in which she says he is coming on the last of this month. A Mrs. O'Reilly hired my fathers house under the hill this morning. at $250 a year from Sept. 15. with the understanding that if they will take it for a year from May 1" she can have it on the same terms. My father is to fix the coal house, put in the glass, clean the house and spoke of building a picket fence in front of the two houses.

Saturday 28. Painted a sketch of morning-glories this forenoon. The weather is delightful, warm in the sun-shine but with a September feeling in the shade.
