the Academy at the Centennial. I don't believe the Academicians will take interest enough to come. We will see. 
It has grown suddenly very cold with a strong wind from the North. My ears tingled as in mid-winter.

Thursday Dec 2. 1875. The weather still continues cold and the river is closed above Hudson, and it is full of ice below. I am suffering with a severe cold for the first time in a year. Dr. Joslin whom I sent for called and prescribed for me this evening. Frank Weeks called to say that Robt. De Forest would want my picture the Danger Signal. Is coming to see me. Wrote to Mr. De Forest in Europe to borrow his picture for the Centennial. Recd a letter from Eastman Johnson who is getting ready to come to town. Wrote to him and to Gertrude. Had a note from Mr. Latimer in charge of the galleries in Brooklyn to know if my pictures were for sale and the prices. 

Monday 6. Sick all day Friday. Headache! Sat in my chair all day. Went home Saturday morning and returned today feeling better. The river frozen solidly from Rhinebeck north and all navigation suspended from Rondout. Took up my essay and read it to Gertrude. All seemed pleased with it. Tonight went to the Council of the Academy. As I supposed not a sufficient number of Academicians reported to base any calculation upon for applying for a separate gallery at the Centennial. Whittredge is too easily irritated for the President of the Academy. Detracts from his usefulness. Does a great deal but worries too much. Called on Mrs. Taylor on my way to the Academy. 

Tuesday 7. Have not felt at all well and so have not painted. Mr. Wilson called to talk about the picture. The result is I am to go to his house to confer with him and his wife tomorrow night. I dont believe anything will come of it. They dont know what they want and I dislike to paint to their whims. However I will try to get at them. Eastman Johnson came in. Just got back today from Nantucket. Only saw him a moment as Wilson was here. Dined at Frank Weeks. It was raining when I
