went over. After dinner we went up stairs and called on the Folsoms. Had a very pleasant call. Rich and luxurious apartments, a fine library Mr & Mrs Fuller were there and a Mr. Bartlett an American from England who had to be translated into American so thoroughly English had he grown. Wrote to Gertrude today. 

Wednesday Dec. 8. 1875. Rained all day. Called at the Wilsons to talk about the picture. Found out that Tom Smiths weak and bogus sentimentality touches them as deeply as I can. These people are a study to me. The house rich and elegant but looking as though if any thing were moved an inch out of its proper place they would be unhappy. The servant girl asked me to wipe my feet when I entered. I am to paint them a picture. I shall try to paint a good one and if they dont want it some one else will. Shall paint a small one first and let them see it. Wrote to Gertrude from whom I received a letter today. Gifford dined with me. He is not well and says he cant paint. 

Friday 10. Gifford and Eastman Johnson dined with me last night. Today and yesterday have been at work on a study for the Wilson picture I wish people would leave me untrammeled I find it very difficult to keep their ideas in accord with my own. Van Derlep sent me tickets to a lecture on Dialect Humor at Association Hall by Andrews. It was mostly made up of anecdotes which he related with effect. It was very entertaining. Mrs. Marcus Spring and her son called What a sentimental old Lady. She bores with a small gimlet. My cold sticks to me. Weeks came for me yesterday to go to a wedding reception but I felt so badly I had to decline. Have coughed incessantly today. 

Tuesday 14. Went home Saturday by 11. oclock train. Had a delightful visit. Home seems even pleasanter in winter than in summer. The Literary Club met at our house Saturday evening and I read my essay on Michael Angelo. Judge Westbrook presided and although it was a somewhat stormy evening we had the largest
