Thursday Jan. 13" 1876. Attended a Centennial meeting last night at John Taylor Johnstons. Mr. Gorham the Director General was there and also Mr. Sartain to meet the State board, the Advisory Committee and the Committee on selection. It was arranged that the State board in conjunction with the Advisory Committee see to getting the works together for the Committee on selection to decide upon. We are to have another meeting on Tuesday. Today I have been painting a water color. Miss Dr Noxon called with a friend getting art items for the World. Went up to Eastman Johnsons. The weather is very cold. Found them just going out and so I called on the Platts where I spent the evening. Spoke with Platt about Clark Bell as Booth wished me to. Booth it seems put the theatre in his hands when he got in trouble. The building has been wiped out by mortgages and he turned over the properties to Platt who realized several thousand dollars out of them but he has never rendered an account which Platt is pressing him for. He conducted the theatre for a while and Platt is of the same opinion as Booth that Bell has money he has never accounted for. He wants me to ask Booth if he will be in town any time between now and the first of May. I want to write all this to Booth.

Monday Jan 17. Had a meeting of the Artist Mutual Aid society at my studio on Friday evening, which was very harmonious. After adjourning Whittredge and Beard got into a quarrel over Academy affairs and had hot words between them. Went home on Saturday taking Mr. Krulder with me to estimate on my proposed studio. He examined it on Sunday and made an approximate estimate of the cost at $1330. Wrote a long letter to Booth Sunday which I sent to Richmond today. The weather remarkably mild. Came back today. Mr. Wilson called and seemed pleased with the picture as far as it has gone. Gifford dined with me. Went to the Council Meeting. Very foggy out and warm.

Friday Jan. 21. Went to the private view of the Artists Fund on Monday evening at the Kintz Gallery. Could not help noticing how much more its members are ready
