down to Utica through Whitesboro through the mud. It is a fearfully muddy country. We had a little time in Utica and we walked about a little. It seemed quite a great city to me as a boy but looked somewhat tamer to me now. Left Utica at 11.25 by the Special N.Y. train and arrived here at 7. Had supper and went to the council meeting where we decided on the annual dinner. Julia Vaux breakfasted with me and Girard lunched with me today. Went out in the morning to see the Blodgett pictures which are to be sold at auction. There are some fine coutures a Troyon with a fine sky besides Church's Heart of the Andes, The Aurora &c. Church was in to see me about his picture for the Centennial. I told him I would telegraph him if we were called to Philadelphia before he returned next week. Wrote to Gertrude. Gifford dined with me

Wednesday Apl. 19. 1876. Went down to Schaus' Gallery to see a picture by Ziem which Gifford told me of last night. It is a beautiful picture in color and so freely painted. It looks like Venice, but an ideal Venice, and is altogether charming to me. I also stopped in to see Caleb Lyons ceramic collection which is to be sold at auction and went in a moment to see the Troyon again in the Blodgett collection. A great event in my life was the purchase today of a pair of eye glasses which have become a necessity at times. Miss Sara Sedgwick called today by appointment with a Mrs. Zabriskie who bought one of my water colors out of the Exhibition. She didn't seem to be much interested in my pictures and said she was sorry she had bought the water color which wasn't very encouraging from a person who I understood wanted to get one of my pictures. Called on the Wilsons.

Thursday 20. Tried to paint but couldn't. Put on my hat and went up town to exchange my spectacles which I discovered had a flaw in them and from there went to the Academy. Quite a number of people there. Met McClure who used to be Church's man. Had not been in N.Y. for several years. Thankful the Exhibition much better than it used to be. - Sent Gertrudes Scotch song book to
