drawing room car with us and at Pokeepsie Major Wilkinson joined us. The winter at home is charming. The snow is very deep and it snowed today when we drove over the river. We had frequent rides when I was home and I was reluctant to come away. Gertrude however is glad to be here again having become dull and tired of the monotony of country life. 

Wednesday Jan. 17" 1877. Booth came yesterday but could not sit. He likes to look at the little pictures every time he comes and seems much pleased with them. I showed the Richelieu & the Hamlet to Beard. He thought the effect of Hamlet very "pretty" but said the head was terribly out of drawing, and tried to show me but I was not convinced. Booth came today and sat from 11 to 4. I had a hard time on the Richelieu but after all I got on and improved it. Is coming again tomorrow. Showed them to Whittredge who spoke very encouragingly. He has an opinion from his father in law Judge Foot on the question whether the recent establishment of paying schools at the Academy does not make it liable to taxation. He is firmly of the opinion that it does and I have not the slightest doubt that he is right. Gertrude and I spent last evening and this in trimming the Vanderlyn engravings and trying to make them presentable for auction. 

Sunday 21. This is the first Sunday I have spent in N.Y. this winter. Booth stood for me on Thursday in Richelieu which I have about completed. On Friday he stood as "Bertuccio in the "Fools Revenge" in a most difficult attitude. I feared I never could get it but in one painting I have succeeded in getting one of the best of the series.  He has to dress and make himself up and the wigs and dresses some of them are extremely uncomfortable. He talked of Fechter on Wednesday and gave him great praise as an
