mentored him on it and also Wyant on his picture which had an exceedingly vigorous sky. There was an interesting collection of pictures, many of them Academy pictures I think.

Sunday March 14. 1877. We went to Mrs. John Bigelows in 30" St to hear John Weiss read an essay on "Comedy in Nature" in which he shared the important part in our lives which the humorous element plays. He made a most powerful and convincing appeal for the theatre and in spite of many eccentricities of expression and manner I enjoyed it very much. About twenty or thirty people were present among them Duncan B. Eaton & his wife Mr. Mace, Mrs. Dodge & her sister Mrs. Tolles, Miss Carter Mr. & Mrs Swayne Gifford. Mrs. Frothingham and others. Wrote to Sara telling her we would go home next Saturday by the 11 oclock train.

* Thursday 15. I did not feel well on Monday and stayed quietly in my room. Tuesday evening went to Mrs. Gordons artist party. Wednesday went to the Wheelers to spend a couple of days. The weather has cleared off cold. Received a thousand dollars today from the Buffalo Art Association for my picture "Sea from Shore. Palmer called to see me. Have not seen him since he went to Europe.

Friday 16. We had Eastman and his wife, Whittredge and his wife, Vaux and Gifford to dinner. We had a very nice dinner and all seemed to enjoy it greatly as we certainly did. It snowed and winter seemed to have come again. 

Friday 23". We went home on Saturday morning. It had cleared off but the weather was sullen and when we reached Rhinebeck it had grown very cold. I was much shocked at the ferry. A seedy looking young man spoke to
