The Topsy was a colored girl born a slave and she acted the part capitally.

Last night the Artists Mutual Aid Society met at my studio to make arrangements for a contribution to Irvings family. After transacting some business, we adjourned to meet at Irvings Studio next Tuesday evening when some of Irvings friends who have expressed a wish to cooperate with us will meet us there. Had a letter from Booth a day or two ago in which he seemed to be anxious that I should finish the character pictures. I wrote him yesterday telling him I am at work on them. I am so much interrupted however that I do not accomplish much, and besides am in the Dentists hands.

Saturday May 5" 1877. Went home last Saturday and returned on Tuesday with Gertrude. There was a meeting of our Artists Aid Society at Beards room to give some of Irvings personal friends to cooperate with us. Few of them came however. Col Hawkins and a Mr. Taylor and they with Avery agreed to act as a committee independently of our society to raise funds as they could decide. Wednesday evening we dined [[strikethrough]] with [[strikethrough]] 
at Taylors to meet Boker our Minister to Russia who is at home on a visit. It was very informal and very pleasant. Thursday at the Century to attend a Trustees meeting and last night at the Art Museum reception to see the Cesnola collection from Kumrun. Today we are going up to spend Sunday with Vaux. Mr. Hoe has invited me to go up to his place at Tarrytown on Tuesday. I have worked this week on the backgrounds of the Booth pictures but my invention is all gone and I work with difficulty.

Tuesday 8. We went up to Alpine on Saturday and spent Sunday with Calvert & Mary. Dr. Emerson
