back Monday feeling very depressed. Burger urged me to go to Wallachs with him to see "My Awful Dad" which I did rather against my will as I was not in the mood for the theatre. The weather is warm and dispiriting. Booth came today and I worked on Ruy Blas, advancing it considerably. Have felt less depressed today but not cheerful. I owe a few little bills which worry me. Rock called for his but he was very polite. It kills me to have my credit suffer. I wrote a note to Mrs. Pychouska asking her if she thought it advisable for me to ask Mr. Dodd to come and see my new picture. I feel I ought to use all legitimate means to try to sell it but I would not do this if I were independent. Called at Mrs. Grays but she was not at home Called on the Platts. Came home and wrote Gertrude as I did last night. Burger and Durning dined with me. Julia stood up today and they hope to take her home this week. 

Thursday Jan. 24. 1878. Yesterday Booth came for a little while but the light was so fitful I did not do much. Went to Mrs. Whiteheads Kettle drum at 4 o'clock. The weather was intensely cold and the wind a terrific gale. Dined with Fred and Alice Sawyer and Eddy Boardman but had to hurry away to attend a meeting at Pinchot's. He came to my room in the afternoon to invite me to meet him and Parke Godwin of the Art Committee for the French Exposition, with Huntington, Gifford, Whittredge, & Eastman Johnson to advise privately and confidentially as to what means to select to ask to contribute. We discussed certain names and at 11 o'clock had a nice supper. Today Booth came late and I commenced Richard III. He was pleased with the commencement but I find it is out of drawing. This evening dined alone and went up to Platts who went with me to the 5" Av hotel to call on the Cheneys where we spent a very
