Saturday Feb. 9. 1877 Went at the Richelieu and painted from recollection and I think made it more like him. Went home by the 4 o'clock train and rode in the dining room car in great comfort. Tom met me at the ferry. Great deal of ice, but no trouble in crossing. Found my father quite ill and looking very feeble. He staid in bed all day Sunday. It snowed all night and was still snowing Sunday and snowed most of the day a delightful storm. I saw innumerable pictures. Cleared off towards night.

Monday. 11. Gave Girard my check for $520.33 for a note of my fathers he paid on Wednesday also left him my check for $390 to pay my fathers interest $350 and an order on John McEntee for $100 to pay my interest $140. So there goes nearly all I got for my picture. At Rhinebeck met Platt. We got in a car together but it was so filthy and crowded at Pokespsie we got into a dining room car where I met Church. They are at work on the ice. The Norwich was out breaking the ferry back. Tonight it is cold. Wrote to Mr. Dod the motive for my picture an answer to Whitelaw Reid of a nice note from him about Pinchot's affair I received as I left on Saturday. Also wrote to Gertrude.

Tuesday 12. Awoke with a headache again and felt badly all day. Painted on a little winter picture I began last year "A sunny evening" and made a very nice little picture of it. In the evening called at Pinchots and spent the evening. Hurlbut had made an ample retraction in the World and he had dined with Reid since I saw him. Reid told him of receiving a note from me and I showed them Reids note.
