I believe in the old instincts, ideas, sentiment and not execution. To the breakfast to Taylor at the Century at which Mr. Bryant presided. A thoroughly century affair and very enjoyable. Sat near Taylor between Mr. Pinkerton and Mr. Stout. My cold is very bad but in spite of it I enjoyed the occasion greatly

Sunday Mar. 17. 1878. Rained all day. Made a drawing for Scribner. In the evening went up to Taylors for the last time. The Stedmans were to have come but were prevented by the rain I presume. Taylor showed us his commission and the big envelope containing his credentials and also the Presidents letter to the Emperor. It was doleful to think we would see them in their pleasant apartment no more. Taylor says he will write to me if for no other reason, to get my letters which he likes better than any others, which is saying a great deal. Mrs. Bullard came with her carriage in the afternoon and took Gertrude to the "Swash" exhibition at Kurtzs.

Monday 18 Dined with the G. B. Club. Sat next to Whitelaw Reid and had an interesting conversation with him on Art. He is dissatisfied with Cook and would gladly find some one to fill his place but who is there? He told me he suppressed an article of his on the Paris selection of pictures because it was abusive of the Committee.

Thursday 21. Have been at work on my picture On Tuesday I abandoned it in despair but yesterday I changed my plan of it, worked hard all
