He retained his faculties to the last and died peacefully and apparently without pain. Today I have begun to put a coat of raw linseed oil over the house outside We painted it two years ago and the colors have faded. I find by oiling it the color is restored and I intend to go over the whole of it. 

Wednesday June 19. 1878. Worked all forenoon yesterday on the house and Gertrude and I took a ride in the afternoon after I came from Mr. Williams funeral. We went out beyond Glen Erie and came back by the upper road from Martins. Today worked all forenoon and in the afternoon wrote long letters to Lucy and to Mary making certain propositions with regard to assisting me to keep our property here. Mr. Wm Hathaway, Hiram and Lucy called. The weather is perfect. Had a letter from Whittredge and one from Booth.

Thursday 20. Worked on the house until ten o'clock when my head felt so badly I stopped. Had a headache all day until tea time when it disappeared.

Friday 21. Worked on the house all forenoon. Wrote to Booth. 

Saturday 22. Sara went to N.Y. on the Powell to meet Gussie, Joe and Laura. It rained violently here all day. I spent the forenoon painting the sash. Gussie and Laura arrived with Sara but Joe did not come, thinking it better to rest in New York. Laura is much changed and looked very ill. Poor Gussie was overcome by her emotions and gave way utterly, for the first time I dare say since Dwight died. 

Monday 24. Joe Tomkins arrived looking very badly I worked on the house

Tuesday 25. Old Dr. Crispell came to see Joe and tells him he can cure him if he will remain quiet which has greatly encouraged him. I painted on the house all forenoon and in the afternoon Gertrude and I took a ride up through Eddyville and Dashville, crossed Penine's bridge and returned by Rosendale and Greenville. Sara and Maurice
