Saturday July 20, 1878. Mary and Miriam came up on the Powell Tuesday evening and Mary returned to Fishkill this morning with the day boat. Thursday and Friday were exceptionally hot. Yesterday John McEntee, Girard Mr. Taylor and I went fishing up at the Powder Mill. It was very hot but not as hot as the day before. Found Mr. Osman here when we returned. As we all sat in the park last evening Frank Thurber and Mrs. Wheeler drove up to call on us. They came by the Powell and are on their way to the Overlook where Mrs. Thurber and her children are staying. We pressed them to spend the night with us but they preferred the Mansion House as they had to leave early this morning. Went out to Leggs Mill for the afternoon and had our tea there.

Monday 22. We had showers yesterday and this morning the wind was from the north and a coolness like October with a grey brooding sky has masked the day and cleared the heated terms. Sara Collins called Maurice's friend Mr. Fansher came and left again this evening. I have been at work all day in the lattice screen. This has been what I call a poetic day. Yesterday I wrote a short apologetic note to N. H. Vanderbilt having learned from Mrs. Cross that she was not related to him as I had been told. Also wrote to Wilmurt to get my pictures for St. Louis, to Mr. Harris sec. of the St. Louis exhibition sending titles & prices of pictures to Mrs. Harris, Dr. McCurdy's daughter.

Tuesday 23. Gertrude, Sara, Laura & Osman went to N.Y. on the Powell on the Choral Union's excursion. Marian went with them on her way home. I worked on my screen. It was a cool, charming day. Received a note from Booth and one from S.A. Coale of St. Louis advising me not to send pictures to St. Louis as the affair was a fraud. His letter sounds as if he had a grievance.
