intercede with her Uncle to take her to Boston to play his engagement with him. Said she thought I had great influence with him. Bertha tells me the poor girl is not happy at home and is taking care of herself. I felt sorry for her and told her I should certainly recommend him to take her. She is very pretty but seemed a little awkward and not entirely at ease. I asked Edmund to bring some of her music to my studio to play for me and to bring her cousin with her who also plays and sings.

Monday Dec. 8. 1879 Beard brought Mrs. Wickes whose husband bought my picture "Over the hills and far away" and a Mrs. Hopkins to my room. Mrs. Hopkins said she would bring her husband very soon to buy one of my pictures. She seemed to like my pictures very much and I had a very entertaining conversation with them as they were both very bright and chatty. Mrs. Wheeler called with Mrs. Gnl Custer, a very pretty woman dressed in the deepest mourning. She is engaged at the Decorative Art Society rooms in some capacity. Mrs. Wheeler selected her picture which I owe her for the horse. She took the study for Falling Leaves. I showed them my old piece of crewel work with which Mrs. Wheeler was greatly pleased. Attended the Council meeting and as Mrs. Huntington was not there, I took the chair. I received a secret letter from Sade with such loving words about dear Gertrude. I could not keep back the tears. Mrs. Wheeler talked with me about her today in a very tender and loving way.

Tuesday 9. Sent Mrs. Wheelers picture home today and sent a picture to the St. Nicholas club. Wrote to Mr. B. Roberts telling him his picture is ready. Called at the Platts.

Wednesday 10. Mr. M.O. Roberts came this morning in answer to my note. I showed him the picture but he concluded to take the Kaatskill brook, Indian Summer (20x24) instead. I was disappointed for I wanted him to have a more important work of mine. I don't think he cared for either of them but somehow seemed to feel obliged to buy something, which was unpleasant to me, still he was very friendly and invited me to come to see him tomorrow. I made a sketch of my studio from my bedroom. I should like to paint it freely just to get the color which is very fine and rich. Dined with the Wheelers in company with the Giffords and Mrs. Custer after which we went to see Southern on Wednesday at the Grand Opera house. The house was close and hot and we were so far from the stage we could not hear distinctly. Skinner had bought me tickets to the opera which I took over to Mary. Went home with the relatives to a petit supper and then home. A rainy night.

Thursday 11 Rainy & dismal. Was out buying Christmas presents and
