a long letter from Weir. Packed up a box of presents for all of Weirs family to go on Monday.

Sunday Dec. 21. 1879. The shortest day and bitterly cold. I came to my room after breakfast and busied myself with packing and arranging my Christmas presents. Charlie Coleman called and a little after one, I went up to Pinchot's to dine. Found Gifford and his wife there. Pinchot talked with me about establishing a permanent gallery of art and wanted us to suggest some place. He is sure the money can be easily raised. I suggested it be done in connection with the Academy by bringing the lots on 24" & 4" Av. First get a gallery and the pictures will be sure to come. He is to invite several of us later and we are to discuss the idea. He seems to want to initiate the project and I assured him of my cordial support. After dinner we called at the Wilsons and from there I went to see Mrs. Stoddard. I took her a pair of Gertrudes pretty silk stockings. She told me she used to see how pretty and dainty her feet looked in her silk stockings and how she made her lift her skirts to show them. I remember Gertrudes telling me of this in her laughing way. "Uncle Edward" was there and I staid only a short time. Went home to tea and from there to Booths where I spent the evening no one but themselves being there. I read him what Weir said in his letter, and I had such a quiet, cozy evening.

Monday 22. It snowed last night and was still snowing when I went over to breakfast, but soon ceased and the city is in a state of mud and slush. I have painted all day Dark as it was in my Kaatskill brook picture. Carried the box for Mrs. Weir up to Adams Express and went to see about my shoes which were not done. Attended the Council meeting and presided as Mr. Huntington was not there. Marion and I go home tomorrow by 11 o'clock train for Christmas. I am very anxious and troubled having so much money to pay and see no prospect of selling my pictures. After the holidays perhaps people will begin to think of pictures. Sent my letter to Mrs. Weir but ordered the box to be delivered Friday.
