and Mrs. Booth came in to see us, looking so very badly. Gifford, Calvert and I went to his dressing room at the end of the second act. He told us he was alarmed about her and I think she too is troubled about herself. She looks to me as though she were on a rapid decline. He played with greater refinement than ever and this I think I is one of his great roles.

Tuesday Apl. 20. Another gloomy day. I am so unhappy cannot work and am so lonely. What we suffer in mind is so strange to think of. Oh if we could be serene and learn patience and resignation. Eastman came in and wanted me to go with him to see Booth in Macbeth tomorrow night. We walked up to the Academy together. Brown told me he was quite sure he would sell my picture "Water Places" and had been in negotiation for it with some one. He also said that he thought I would sell my "Sources of the Delaware" to a friend of Mr. Goodman who was coming to town in a day or two. Booth came in and we talked for a long time. He is greatly troubled about his wife's health and she is so difficult to advise or help. I wrote to Sara - went to the Thurbers to dine and to my surprise found Lawrence, Walter Palmer, Miss Van Doren, Miss Emmett and Mr. Myer, Mrs Thurbers brother there. The talk was entirely about Chase, not a particularly interesting topic to me but I suppose it is pardonable in these young girls who are his pupils. I left early and went to our life class.

Wednesday 21. Mr. Bachelder called. I tried to paint a small picture but with no success and worked on my larger one. Dined at Eastmans with his sister Hattie and we all went to see Booth as Macbeth. Eastman and I went to his room Mrs. Booth and her mother were there and Mrs. Booth looked very ill. Her mother told Eastman she thought her in a very critical condition. A nice long letter from Weir. There was a terrible disaster this evening at the Madison Square Garden where the Hahnemann Fair is in progress. The wall fell killing three people and wounding others and destroying many of the pictures in the Art Gallery. We heard of it from Mrs. Booth to whom Dr. Doremus had sent a note.

Thursday 22. This has been a most sad day to me. I have felt myself so alone and have thought so much
